Our route for day 2
Market Day in Dinan
Dinan is known for its medieval ramparts, cobblestone streets and half-timbered houses. Dinan Castle has a 14th-century keep.
The Keep.
Leaving Dinan, we continued our northward journey to the Pointe du Grouin which guards the entrance to Mont Saint Michel Bay. From the Pointe you have a great view of the bird sanctuary on the Île des Landes, and in the far distance to the east you can see Mont Saint Michel.
A leftover German bunker from World War II...part of Rommel's Atlantic Wall.
Stonemasons at work.
In the distance Mont Saint Michel. It's on the horizon, just to the right of the sailboat.
Leaving Le Pointe, we drove just 15 km south along the coast to the village of Cancale, Brittany's oyster capital, for lunch.
Moving on we followed the coast to Saint-Malo.
Saint-Malo is a walled city and was once a stronghold for privateers, pirates approved by the king.
The Saint-Malo Cathedral, in the center of the old town, was built in Romanesque and Gothic styles and features stained-glass windows depicting city history.
A replica of a corsair's ship. Corsairs were pirates that were legalized by the French king with whom they would share their booty. Many corsairs sailed from Saint-Malo.
The mariner Jacques Cartier, born in 1491, is from Saint-Malo, and he was the first European to explorer the areas in the Gulf of Saint Lawrence, Newfoundland, and Labrador. He is also credited with building a lengthy bridge across the St. Lawrence River in Montréal.
We left Saint-Malo around 6:30 PM, making it back to Rennes just in time for another fabulous dinner.
